Hip Tip from Courtney Jaye

Singer/songwriter Courtney Jaye has journeyed far and wide to arrive at her current headspace. Her Island Records debut, Traveling Light, showcases her sweet, pop-inflected vocals and acoustic-driven tunes—tunes that grew out of collaborations with Matthew Sweet, Butch Walker, Nina Gordon, and others. She is currently working on her sophomore effort.

“When I live in or visit certain places,” says Jaye, “I get drawn to the music and the instruments that are native to those places. I’ve lived in Atlanta, Flagstaff, and Austin and I drew from all of those cities. I’ve traveled to reggae, jazz, and bluegrass festivals. I lived in Hawaii and that made me realize how much I love the ukulele and the percussion and the rhythms that come from the islands. All those elements contribute to my sound. I’m heading to St. Lucia in the Caribbean tomorrow for a couple of weeks to research exotic instruments down there for my next record. All this has taken a long time but I wouldn’t change it. These places have a huge effect on the kind of writer, performer, and artist I am.”
