Guitar Player is thrilled to present the Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute Band featuring Vernon Reid, Jack Bruce, John Medeski, and Cindy Blackman at Yoshi’s Oakland in Jack London Square on February 2nd—Win tickets!
When it comes to jazz-rock, few acts made the kind of mark that former Miles Davis drummer Tony Williams made with his Lifetime bands. Williams formed the first Lifetime in 1969 with John McLaughlin on electric guitar, and Larry Young on organ. Several lineup changes ensued over the years, the most notable additions being Alan Holdsworth on guitar, and Jack Bruce on bass. The legendary Cream thumper will sure have Yoshi’s stage undulating while providing a solid foundation for Vernon Reid’s fiery fusion excursions.
Although he’s most famous for pushing rock’s boundaries in Living Colour on tunes such as “Cult of Personality” and “Open Letter to a Landlord,” Reid actually kicked off his career playing cutting edge jazz in drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, which whom he recorded six albums. Reid’s signature whammy bends and singing overdrive tone can be heard on “Wildlife” from drummer Cindy Blackman’s 2010 Williams tribute Another Lifetime. Williams recently married Carlos Santana, so hopes of a guest appearance are high.
Make your plans to see Reid, Bruce, Blackman, and Medeski (of Medeski, Martin & Wood) who will collectively test the soundness of the infrastructure at the East Bay’s premier jazz venue.
