Roy Rogers is one of the most devastating slide players prowling the planet. GP acknowledged Rogers’ stratospheric skills by including him in its hotly debated February 2007 cover story, “101 Forgotten Greats & Unsung Heroes.” Rogers remains the consummate guitar cowboy—riding just under the mainstream radar, and blowing minds at each stop along his singular path.
John Lee Hooker gave Rogers his first big break in 1982 when the notorious icon recognized Rogers’ mastery of many blues styles, particularly Delta blues. He made Rogers the featured player and singer in his Coast to Coast Blues Band, and Rogers eventually produced four records for the Boogieman. Rogers has also worked with a lengthy list of other luminaries including Miles Davis, and Taj Mahal.
Rogers has recorded a slew of CDs under his own name, and in various duo settings. 2008 saw the release of his collaboration with Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Ballads Before the Rain [Friday], and this year Rogers has a raucous new record, Split Decision [Blind Pig].
Rogers’ extensive ties to Northern California region have made him one of the region’s most beloved maestros. Don’t miss this special engagement over Memorial Day weekend!
