Papa Mali is like Dr. John with a guitar. His music conjures up images of bayou spirits raving all night in a cemetery dancehall. Mali is a master of rootsy rhythms, and his ripping slide leads can raise the dead. Produced by Fog City honcho Dan Prothero (Galactic, Mofro) Mali’s new CD Do Your Thing is authentic blues with touches of cosmic electronics. Prothero will be on hand to DJ at the Independent, and Mali’s bringing a batch of funky friends to the jam.
Leo Nocentelli is the king of New Orleans funk guitar. His seminal work with the Meters set the blueprint for funk in the Crescent City, and Leo hasn’t let up a lick. Percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville made his name alongside Nocentelli in the latter years of the original Meters, and rose to superstardom in the Neville Brothers. Keyboardist Bernie Worrell is George Clinton’s right hand man, and the backbone of Parliament Funkadelic.
Sparks will shoot from the fingertips of these funkateers when they gather at the Independent, which is one of the premier concert settings in the City by the Bay. Come stoke the fire!
