GP Presents is happy to help Yoshi’s support jazz ace Charlie Hunter for the 10th anniversary of his Home for the Holidays series of dates. Hunter always has something unique up his sleeve, and this year his band features Eric Kalb (John Scofield) on drums, Curtis Fowlkes (Bill Frisell) and Alan Ferber (Don Byron) on trombone, and Ron Miles (Bill Frisell) on trumpet. That’s a complete overhaul compared to the drum and keyboard trio Hunter had in tow last year. He explained his lineup logic in his May 2009 feature:
“I work with whatever band I have until it reaches its height, and then I kill it. What’s the point in continuing if it’s not going to get any better? I’m going to be doing a lot of duo shows with drummers, and augmenting what we do with horns. I’m interested in vertical improvisation based on a strong rhythmic foundation. The concept is to treat tunes more like events, and less like jazz blow-athons. I’m through chasing that rabbit.”
Hunter is world-renowned for his ability to execute hairy lead lines and involved bass lines simultaneously on his custom Novax 7- and 8-string guitars, and he never stops working at it.
“I’m playing more economically,” he mentioned. “For years, I strictly played bass lines with my thumb, and used my fingers on the guitar strings. I originally tried to play guitar lines using three fingers, which was silly because it always sounded like some guy limping. Then I started using two fingers. Now, I essentially use my middle finger to pluck guitar parts, and multitask with the index finger depending on where it’s most needed rhythmically.”
