Guitar Player is especially excited to present Jefferson Starship on its home turf for a special run of shows featuring the seminal Jefferson Airplane album Surrealistic Pillow in its entirety featuring GP’s own Jude Gold on lead guitar!
Jefferson Starship will be the inaugural act at the Rrazz Room’s new venue Live at the Rrazz! Located in the historic Cadillac building on San Francisco’s main artery, Van Ness Avenue, and the six-show residency will run from Thursday, January 17th through Sunday, January 20th. Guitar Player will be onsite for both shows on Friday, January 18th handing out free magazines as well as strings and accessories provided by sponsors D’Addario and Planet Waves.
Jefferson Starship’s storied history goes way back to its roots as Jefferson Airplane, the band that took acid rock to the radio in the late ’60s. Surrealistic Pillow brought the San Francisco collective national attention on the strength of singles “White Rabbit” and “Someone to Love.”
The Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship lineup has changed myriad times, but the band’s rock has always been rhythm guitarist and principle composer Paul Kantner, whose music was accompanied in Jefferson Airplane by Jorma Kaukonen, and on many other recordings by the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia. Longtime GP Lessons guru, former GIT director, and currently GP’s Los Angeles editor Jude Gold is Jefferson Starship’s lead gun now. His connection to Garcia’s playing goes back to his tenure in the JGB. Gold presents a dynamic, original style never heard before in the music of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship while at the same time faithfully conjuring the halcyon repertoire’s iconic solos.
Watch Gold perform “White Rabbit” with Jefferson Starship here.
Gold stepped in on lead guitar for Jefferson Starship in late August, 2012, when the band’s longtime guitarist Slick Aguilar took leave to address health concerns. A Slick Aguilar benefit concert featuring David Crosby, Marty Balin, and other people Aguilar has performed with over the years will be held on February 24 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. The event will raise funds to help Aguilar and his family deal with the financial challenges involved in his need for a liver transplant.
Kantner’s current Jefferson Starship crew features Cathy Richardson, star of the stage musical tribute to Janis Joplin, Love, Janis, out front in the Grace Slick role as well as David Frieberg singing parts originally done by Marty Balin. Frieberg is a former member of Quicksilver Messenger Service who originally joined Jefferson Airplane way back in 1972.
The Imperial Messenger Service—reprising the Quicksilver Messenger Service canon—will open the Rrazz shows. This is the debut of this side project fronted by David Freiberg and his wife Linda Imperial.
Got all that? All you really need to remember is this is the real deal. This is a special opportunity to feel the heart of the San Francisco rock sound still beating strong in its hometown featuring one of the most respected and beloved members of the Guitar Player family—Jude Gold—ripping away at the strings.
