Hot off an outstanding appearance at the Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park, Gary Clark Jr. is taking his soul-rock guitar experience across the San Francisco Bay to the plush Fox Theater in Oakland, CA. Clark was GP’s January 2013 cover artist, and there will be free copies at the GP Presents table in the grand venue’s spacious lobby.
Clark is an Austin bluesman at his core who’s tonal signature is heavily affected by his choice to wield the fully hollow Epiphone Casino rather than a solidbody like his heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Clark told GP:
“The whole hollowbody guitar shakes when you play it. It rings and resonates. The tonal range from dark to light is broader. You know that connection you feel when you hold an acoustic guitar close to you? That’s what I feel when I play the Casino.”
One of Clark’s perennial showstoppers, "If You Love Me Like You Say,” is bookended by the main theme from Hendrix’s opus “Third Stone From the Sun." Clark explained:
“Jimi and Stevie were major influences on me. I lost my mind when I heard Stevie’s version of ‘Third Stone’ from Live at the El Mocambo. I wanted to show them respect, but not do a full-on cover trying to outdo the original. I felt that doing a portion was the best way to try tackling Hendrix.”
Each night on tour Clark comes a step closer to becoming this decade’s hottest roots rock star. Come witness his intensity up close and personal on October 2nd, and bring a friend who appreciates exceptionally expressive guitar playing.
