Recently, a “Mod Squad” reader named Wil called looking for advice on replacing the bridge saddles on his early ’70s Gibson SG. The bridge screws that adjust the saddles to and fro were locked in place, and he couldn’t remove the worn-out saddles to replace them. I told him a similar version of that bridge is available, and would probably cost less than we’d charge to refurbish the original, but Wil wanted to maintain his SG’s vintage pedigree. I offered to replace the saddles for him if he’d send the bridge to Mod Squad Headquarters, and let our very own Chelsea Clark—who excels at cleaning parts and enjoys restoration work—do the gig. Here’s how she tackled the job.
