Alan Pasqua

The Antisocial Club [Cryptogramophone]

Veteran keyboardist, composer, and bandleader Pasqua has worked with a daunting variety of jazz greats, including playing alongside Allan Holdsworth in the New Tony Williams Lifetime during the mid-’70s. Here, he has assembled a remarkable group of musicians to play music that is suggestive of so-called “electric Miles,” without being overly derivative. Drummer Scott Amendola, bassist Jimmy Haslip, and percussionist Alex Acuña hold down the grooves, while trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and saxophonist Jeff Ellwood soar over the top. Guitarist Nels Cline makes with the funky chords, sinewy riffs, spacey effects, and occasional solo—such as the slippery wah wailing on “George Russell” and the totally affected freak-out on “Fast Food.” The compositions and performances presented here totally transcend “tribute” status, and would likely bring great pleasure to the Man with the Horn.
