Guitar Player continues its time-honored tradition of helping consulting editor Jim Campilongo throw his annual holiday homecoming show, which will take place for the third consecutive year at San Francisco’s finest jazz house, Yoshi’s, with a single Sunday evening show on December 23rd. According to the country noir Telecaster master, this year’s event is extra special for several reasons.
“This will be the first time I bring a quartet (rather than a trio) to a Bay Area stage in over a decade,” explains Campilongo. “I’m flying in my whole New York band including Tony Mason (drums), Erik Deutsch (organ) and Jeff Hill (bass). We’ll play some new material written specifically for quartet as well as fresh quartet arrangements of songs that Bay Area folks probably haven’t heard unless they’ve seen us in New York.”
Campilongo’s long-standing Monday night gig at the Living Room is one of the most venerable residencies in the Big Apple. Guitar gurus such as Nels Cline and Charlie Hunter are liable to sit in, and stars from Lou Reed to Patrick Stewart have shown up to watch.
Campilongo has collaborated with the Little Willies (featuring Norah Jones) since moving from the Bay Area to Brooklyn in 2003. At the outset of 2012 the hepped up classic country ensemble released its second album, For the Good Times, on EMI/Blue Note Records and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote. Watch the inspired performance of “I Worship You”—that’s one hell of a happy guitar player ripping those rockabilly licks and pseudo pedal steel bends!
Campilongo’s peer respect and national profile inspired Fender to issue a limited edition of Jim Campilongo Signature Top-Loader Telecasters (in white like Jim’s trademark ’59, or orange in honor of his raucous 2010 release, Orange) that zealous Tele cats quickly snatched up.
Bay Area guitar aficionados snatched up every single ticket to Campilongo’s holiday show last year, so don’t hesitate—grab yours right now.
