Fifty Willamette Valley Producers Celebrate 50th Anniversary in NYC
Pinot in the City, a wine-tasting event organized by the Willamette Valley Wineries Association (WVWA), will return to New York this spring. On April 14, City Winery in Manhattan will host 50 wineries celebrating the 50th anniversary since the region’s first planting of Pinot noir. Pioneers like Erath Winery
will pour alongside newer arrivals like Mouton Noir Wines. It is the latest in a series of road-show events held in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Washington DC and Seattle.
Pinot in the City brings the heart and soul of Oregon wine country to markets around the United States. Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley’s prized variety, will take center stage, but other wines like Riesling and Chardonnay will be featured too. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the first planting of Pinot noir in the Willamette Valley, and producers will be showcasing the remarkable progress that has taken place in those years. The first brave growers in the 1960s were convinced that the risky but unique climate of the Willamette Valley would make it one of the most important Pinot-producing regions in the world. Today, the Willamette Valley is the epicenter of Oregon’s multi-billion-dollar-per-year wine industry, boasting an ever-growing cast of artisanal producers.
“New York is a food and wine hub, and we couldn’t be happier to be back, especially as we kick off our 50th year of winegrowing,” said Sue Horstmann, executive director of the WVWA. “Willamette Valley wine is at an interesting intersection of rich tradition and new-found momentum right now. Delivering a taste of this old and new in our award-winning wines to New Yorkers firsthand is tremendously exciting.”
Winemakers and principal figures from each winery will present their wines for a unique and personal tasting experience. This contact with the characters behind the bottles gives attendees a chance to discuss a recent harvest, a new variety or a recently-planted vineyard with the vintner himself. City Winery, an urban winery, restaurant and music venue in Soho, will provide small plates to accompany the wines.
