Guitarists in the market to pick up a few vintage beauties would do well to peruse Heritage Auctions’ upcoming Fine and Vintage Guitar and Stringed Instruments auction, scheduled to take place Feb. 18-20. Among the many stunning items on the block include a 1961 Rickenbacker 4001 Fireglo electric bass, the iconic model played by Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, and John Entwistle, among others. Also on hand will be a 1959 Rickenbacker 375 Capri sunburst semi-hollowbody electric, a 1959 blond Fender Tele and a ‘59 blond Esquire, and a trio of Martins—a 1937 D-18 sunburst, a 1931 OM-28 and a rare Orchestra model, unrestored and never repaired.
The centerpiece of the auction, however, is a stunning 1960 cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standard, expected to go for upward of $100,000. Says Mike Gutierrez, Consignment Director at Heritage, “Whenever one of these early Les Paul Standards shows up it’s going to be a big deal. Gibson only made about 1,700 of these guitars over a three-year period, so, subsequently, they have become highly sought-after by both players and collectors.”
