Let’s face it: there are a lot of guitars out there, and it’s incredibly difficult to build something original in this day and age. Enter George Downing and the Dismal Ax company, out of, you guessed it....Dismal, Tennessee. Downing’s three primary models—the Muleskinner, the Barnstormer, and the Rusticator—are beautifully and simply appointed, and constructed from a mix of locally harvested and salvaged materials, including mesquite, red cedar, and black locust woods. Further creations are adorned with such touches as pickguards constructed from vintage license plates, bottlecap knobs and refrigerator-emblem control plates. With a slew of uniquely customizable options, the attention to detail in these guitars is exceptional and extraordinary.
