Here is, admittedly, an odd idea: equip a guitar with a single, movable humbucking pickup that you can slide back and forth while you play, changing the guitar’s tone via the pickup’s position relative to the strings.
That’s the concept behind the Pole Position, a guitar that uses a single sliding pickup “to give guitarists maximum control over tone.” The guitar is the brainchild of Michael Canavan, who recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise development funds for the Pole Position and begin production.
“The patented Pole Position guitar was specifically designed to offer guitarists the greatest possible range and control over their tone,” Canavan writes on Kickstarter. “Whereas other guitars have a stationary pickup (or pickups) offering a limited number of tone choices, the Pole Position utilizes a single moveable pickup to offer unlimited choices.
“The player can quickly and easily slide the pickup to any position from the bridge to the base of the neck to achieve subtle or dramatic changes in tone as often as desired, even while playing.”
