Kala Brand Music has added Thinline models and a tenor guitar to its line of stringed instruments.

The Kala Thinline guitars are six-string models available in in both steel- and nylon-string versions. Both are cutaway models that feature a Shadow SH Performer Pro Tuner NFX preamp with tuner and Nanoflex pickup.

Kala originally offered a limited edition of the Thinline guitar series from 2008 to 2010, which the company put on hold in order to focus on the burgeoning Kala ukulele and U-BASS brands. The Thinlines are now being reintroduced in response to popular demand from Kala customers.

Kala’s Thinline guitars offer a performance-style cutaway design with a 2 3/4–inch body depth, a solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, gloss finish, and rosewood fingerboard. The steel-string model, KA-GTR-SMTS-E, comes with die-cast chrome tuners, while the nylon-string model, KA-GTR-SMTN-E, features gold classical-style tuners.

The Kala Thinlines have been crafted to have a full rich tone whether played acoustically or when plugged in. The Shadow SH Performer series was selected when it was determined to be a perfect match to reproduce the Kala Thinline’s tonal range when amplified. Controls include bass, lo-mid, hi-mid, treble and phase invert. There is also a chromatic tuner with on/off switch.

Kala’s tenor guitar is a four-string instrument built on a 21 3/8–inch scale and tuned in fifths.

It features a select solid sitka spruce top, rosewood back and sides, a slotted headstock and Grover tuners. The guitar comes strung with with D’Addario Phosphor Bronze strings tuned to C G D A.

What makes the Kala Tenor stand out in a field of instruments, is its size: it’s 3 1/2 inches shorter than a standard-size tenor guitar and one inch longer than a baritone ukulele, making it a true "travel tenor.” The Kala Tenor has been endorsed by Mark Josephs, founder of the The Tenor Guitar Society

Originally made popular by folk artists such as the Kingston Trio, the tenor guitar is experiencing a resurgence in popularity among musicians that are seeking a fresh timbre to add to their performances and arrangements. As a result there has been the emergence of a grassroots movement where tenor guitar enthusiasts have created groups and gatherings across the country.

Kala Brand Music celebrates its 10th year in business in 2015. The company offers more than 200 ukulele models, the Kala U-BASS, Kala Guitars and an extensive ine of ukulele and U-BASS accessories. Kala Brand Music Co. also distributes Aquila Strings.
