In a tad over an hour, this DVD takes you through Barrett’s formative influences (Bob Dylan, Zappa) his formation of Pink Floyd (“They were the house band for London’s burgeoning counter-culture,” exclaims Uncut’s Nigel Williamson), his much-chronicled mental collapse, and subsequent withdrawal from the public eye. Although there are no interviews with his former Floyd mates, a bevy of journalists provide some rather insightful commentary on Barrett’s work as Pink Floyd’s main songwriter, as well as his two “proper” solo records, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. The DVD’s footage is revealing, particularly a TV interview with Barrett and Roger Waters, but don’t expect a preponderance of complete live performances. There are interesting clips, however, of various performances interspersed throughout, including “Interstellar Overdrive,” “Apples and Oranges,” and Jugband Blues,” among others. All in all, a well done, in-depth study of one of rock’s most mysterious characters. (Chrome Dreams).
