Tommy Castro Wins Major Blues Awards!

May 16, 2008

Castro received a Blues Music Award for best "Contemporary Blues Album" for his latest studio masterpiece, Painkiller.  This is the second major honor for the release in the last few months.

The CD, produced by John Porter, who has previously helmed acclaimed recordings by Santana, Los Lonely Boys, and Buddy Guy, was also named "Album of the Year 2007" earlier this year by the readers of Blueswax, the largest subscribed blues publication in the world.

Vintage Guitar acknowledged Castro's ascendancy to the top ranks of blues artists with this review: "Tommy Castro's pure Fender tone, whiskey-and-cigarette voice, and knack for writing a great tune are about as good as it gets on the blues circuit these days."  Painkiller also recently became the first vinyl release in Castro's distinguished career, as it was just issued on LP as part of Blind Pig's Vinyl Masters audiophile LP series.

In another major honor, Castro was also named the winner of the Blues Music Award as "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year,"  confirming his status as one of the most popular and sought-after performers in the blues field.

Tommy's career has been marked by one tr iumph after another since his first Blind Pig release in 1991 (Exception To The Rule).  He's gone from being a local favorite at the tiny Saloon in North Beach to appearing weekly on an NBC-TV network television program, to having one of his albums (Right As Rain) named by the readers of Blueswax as one of the best 40 albums of all time, to opening act on B.B. King's national tours and international acclaim as one of the most compelling artists on the scene.  Not surprising, given his innate charisma and skills as a supremely talented guitarist, gifted vocalist, and engaging songwriter.

After the BMA ceremony, a very pleased Castro said, "My music is a combination of blues, soul and rock, but I've always considered myself a blues singer and a blues guitar player. These awards from the international blues community mean a great deal to me."
