Six New Delay Pedals

October 24, 2011

“What’s old is new again” is a cliché that fairly describes the current state of the delay pedal market—at least from a sonic standpoint—as the latest crop of pedals offers a variety of technically sophisticated methods for producing the kinds of effects favored by guitarists who dig the sound of vintage tape echo and analog delay.

This roundup looks at six recent delay units: the Analog.Man ARDX20 with AMAZE0 controller, Blackstar Amplification HT-Delay, Fuchs Audio Plush Replay Jr., Maxon AD999 Pro, Providence Chrono Delay DLY-4, and the T-Rex Engineering Reptile 2.

These pedals range in price from $265 to $449, and there are many

similarities between them: Four of the six are digital, five offer tap tempo (although the Analog Man ARDX20 requires the optional AMAZE0 controller to access that function), and all but one have the ability to do tape-delay emulations. The Blackstar and Fuchs pedals go a step farther in the quest to deliver vintage-flavored delay effects by incorporating a 12AX7 tube in the output signal path.

I tested all of these units with an ESP 400 series S-style guitar equipped with Lace Sensor pickups into a Music Man 210 HD amplifier.
