Moogerfooger MF-105 MuRF

December 2, 2009

COMBINING A BANK of eight resonant bandpass filters with an "animation" section that modulates the levels of the filters in various ways, the MuRF ($439 retail/$399 street) offers a bevy of effects that range from subtle EQ to phasing to synth-like step sequencing to hyper-distorted, reverse-envelope mayhem.

Like all Moogerfooger pedals, the MuRF sports a clean control surface, pristine audio quality, and classy wooden side panels. The filters are optimized for guitar and bass, and are controlled by individual sliders. Kick in any of the 22 pre-programmed animation sequences using the rotary Pattern knob and two-position Bank switch, and the filters are turned up and down in various combinations, resulting in rhythmic timbral changes. The Envelope knob determines how quickly the filters engage/disengage, Rate adjusts the modulation speed, and Mix blends the processed and dry sounds.

Given the wonderful variety of cool and unique sounds the MuRF produces, and its extraordinary capacity for real-time control—four key parameters can be adjusted using expression pedals such as the optional EP-1 ($40), and the animation rate can be matched to song tempo via footswitch—I heartily recommend the MuRF to any musician seeking to dramatically enhance their sonic palette. You truly have to hear it to believe it. (November 2004)
