Kaki King originally earned her fame as a solo acoustic performer whose jaw-dropping slapping and tapping techniques bolstered brave compositions on her 2003 debut, Everybody Loves You. King’s buzz grew big enough to land her a major label deal for Legs to Make us Longer [Red Ink, 2004], which in turn earned her the cover feature in Frets magazine. On her past two records, Until We Felt Red and Dreaming of Revenge [Velour], King has also embraced the electric instrument, including lap steel and pedal steel guitars. King shed some light on her development in the November 2006 issue of GP:
“There’s a cultural difference to a lot of people who pride themselves on listening to acoustic music, but that never meant anything to me. Music is important—not just “acoustic guitar” music. Technically, the electric guitar has so much more sustain, which makes it a much more difficult beast to tame.”
In addition to her broadening guitar palette, King has also developed a breathy falsetto vocal approach that’s as seductive as her instrumental prowess. She now tours with a band, and we expect a wonderful range of music at this not-to-be-missed performance.
Ovation is providing a Celebrity CC22-4 acoustic-electric guitar with a Lyrachord body (in an Ovation Zero Gravity case) to be autographed by King and given away to one lucky attendee, so be sure to come and sign the Guitar Player Presents mailing list for automatic entry in the free raffle.
