|In July & August 2012, legendary folk icon Arlo Guthrie will gather
three generations of Guthries for a dozen shows throughout North America
to celebrate Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday (July 14, 1912).
For the last four decades, Arlo Guthrie has embodied a spirit of sharing timeless stories and unforgettable classic songs to audiences across the globe. Upholding a long-standing Guthrie Family tradition of traveling to communities far and wide, "Guthrie Family Reunion" brings three generations of voices together on one stage to commemorate the legacy of Woody Guthrie. On the forthcoming tour, Arlo comments, "Getting the family together and heading out on the road is the perfect way to celebrate my father's centennial - only once before did we have the whole family on tour, and we did 80 shows. Instead of doing an entire year of touring and taking the kids out of school, we are focusing on shows right around Woody's actual birthday. This time of year marks the climax of the Woody Guthrie centennial celebrations all over the world. I'll also continue my solo touring in honor of my dad through spring 2013."
On the upcoming tour, the Guthrie Family will perform Woody's songs as well as new material written by various family members. Arlo notes, "The family's new songs are a great representation of our heritage. I like the idea of Woody's legacy being carried forth not only by performing his songs, but to show how it moves us to write our own songs." The Guthries will also play various Arlo standards, and Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion will feature a rendition of Wilco's tune "Airliner" during the set. Jeff Tweedy of Wilco is producing Sarah Lee and Johnny's new full-length studio album, due out in 2013.
"Guthrie Family Reunion" features Arlo alongside his son Abe, who has contributed keyboards and backing vocals to his father's live shows since the '80s. His daughters Cathy, Annie and Sarah Lee Guthrie, all of who have their own bustling music careers, support by singing songs and accompanying on acoustic guitars. Sarah Lee's musical partner and husband Johnny Irion will lead songs and lend his stalwart guitar playing. The youngest generation of Guthrie kids will join in the fun on select songs.
A singular American folk music pioneer, Arlo Guthrie and his family proudly pay tribute to Woody Guthrie and the anniversary of his 100th birthday. Don't miss the Guthrie Family as they tour through a city near you!
