ALTHOUGH TREY GUNN’S WARR GUITAR BOASTS A FIVE-OCTAVE RANGE, HE
has found himself mostly confined to the bass register while playing alongside guitarists,
as he did previously with King Crimson’s Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew. But no such limitation
exists in KTU (pronounced K2), the trio Gunn formed with Finnish accordion player Kimmo
Pohjanen and drummer Pat Mastelotto. “The cool thing about KTU is that Kimmo and I have
essentially the same capacity across the whole sonic spectrum,” says Gunn. “His accordion is
fully chromatic and also has MIDI, so he can trigger all sorts of samples.”
Gunn’s Warr guitar has separate outputs for the “guitar” and “bass” sections. The
guitar signal goes into Native Instruments Guitar Rig, and the bass signal is split—one
side feeding a Raven Labs PMB-II preamp and the other getting the virtual fuzz treatment
in Guitar Rig. “I’m really happy with Guitar Rig,” says Gunn. “It even has a damned
good model of the Electro-Harmonix Micro Synth that I used to carry around, and it’s
programmable.” Quiver [RockAdillo], is the band’s latest album.
