Guitar Player’s 2010 Guitar Superstar Competition
The big event will be held September 18, 2010 at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, California. RULES
Guitar Player magazine's 2010 Guitar Superstar competition is open to electric and acoustic guitar players of all styles. Entries are limited to players living in the domestic United States who are at least 18 years of age. Submission deadline is July 31st, 2010.
All entries must be videos of a guitarist performing an original instrumental work no more than five minutes long. No covers. No singing. No 20-minute prog-rock epics. Both solo and full-band performances are permitted. All video submissions become the property of Guitar Player magazine.
This year, the GP staff will select nine finalists. The tenth contender will be chosen by the public vote. The video that logs the highest number of votes before the entry period closes on July 31, 2010 at 12:59 pm will win that player a spot in the competition.
July 31st, 2010. The ten finalists will be notified on August 15th, 2010. All entrants will be notified of their status via e-mail by August 30th, 2010.
After August 15th, and over the weeks leading up to the big concert on September 18, each finalist will be requested to submit videos charting their rehearsals, as well as answering questions from the GP editors and the public (as submitted via Twitter and Facebook).
All finalists are provided airfare and two nights lodging in an event hotel. The 2010 Guitar Superstar will win gear packages from various guitar manufacturers, a feature story in Guitar Player, and an album contract with Guitar Player Records (distributed by MI5/EMI). Prizes (TBD) will also awarded to the first and second runner-ups.
By August 30th, 2010, all ten finalists will provide Guitar Player with an mp3 and chord charts (or complete musical notation) for the song they will perform at the competition. On the day of the concert, each finalist will get a 30-minute soundcheck with the house band at the venue. Finalists will have use of the venue Green Room during rehearsal and competition times. Additional information on equipment and performance requirements will be provided to the finalists by August 30th. Finalists will be judged by a panel of star guitarists (TBD) using a grading system that ranks technique, originality, creativity, and charisma. A second runner-up, a first runner-up, and the 2010 Guitar Superstar champion will be selected by the panel.
