Buddy Guy is the reigning king of Chicago blues, and a primary inspiration to many of rock’s most revered guitar players, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton. Guy’s guitar style varies from a no-notes-barred approach where he practically rips strings right off the fretboard, to subtle phrases and gentle cries from his Signature Fender Stratocaster. Onstage, Buddy brings more energy than cats half his age, and his showmanship is the stuff of legend.
During more than 40 years in the music business, Buddy has won every music industry award including a recent induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Robert Cray is the quintessential cool blues guitar player. Unlike the fiery Guy, Cray’s approach is calm and collected by comparison. Like Buddy, Cray plays his own Signature Fender Stratocaster, and he favors glistening clean tones as opposed to dirty distortion sounds. Robert’s records tend to favor song craft over fretboard fireworks, which he saves for the show.
He told GP, “In the studio, you don’t feel the crowd reaction and the adrenaline rush you get from being onstage. We like to keep things basic, leaving room for me to have fun vocally and do something different on the guitar each night. I’m always listening to what my note choices sound like with the band so I can take everyone somewhere unexpected.”
Expect the best of the best blues onstage when Buddy Guy and Robert Cray rock the Mountain Winery, and don’t be surprised if they take the stage together.
