Guitar Player Presents Strunz & Farah at Yoshi’s Oakland on March 29th—Win Tickets!
March 13, 2012
GP is happy to help Yoshi’s Oakland bring Strunz & Farah’s unique brand of what Strunz described to GP in 2004 as “international acoustic instrumental improvisational guitar music” to the Bay Area’s flagship jazz venue.
“I think people hear the Spanish guitar, and immediately want to label what they hear as flamenco,” said Strunz. “Unfortunately, that is a very facile assessment. We are certainly influenced by flamenco, but no more so than, say, country, folk, or Latin music. Flamenco has very specific patterns and techniques. For one thing, flamenco is played exclusively with the fingers. Ardeshir plays only with a pick, and I use a pick and my fingers, so there’s a big technical difference right there. Plus, our sound incorporates music from the Middle East, as well as Afro-Latin rhythms that aren’t used in flamenco.”
The staying power of Strunz & Farah is impressive. The duo has consistently found new and creative ways to blend Strunz’s Latin influences with Farah's Arabic influences into something fresh since they began playing together in 1980. Their most recent studio effort came last year in the form of Journey Around the Sun, which leans heavily towards the Latin side of the Strunz & Farah equation.
No matter where Strunz & Farah’s flights of improvisation take them on the last Thursday in March, it’s sure to be an interesting trip. Punch your tickets now!
