Two-hand tapping was the rage of rock player by the time Stanley
Jordan came to prominence in the mid ’80s, but he took the technique to new
heights by playing jazz chords with one hand and bop-inspired runs with the
other. After taking ten years between official releases to study sound healing,
Jordan reappeared in 2008 with State of Nature. He upped
the ante by playing a piano with one hand, and guitar with the other.
“My original instrument was piano, and when I switched to guitar,
I still had this piano thing in me, so I developed the whole two-handed
technique in order to play the guitar more like a piano,” Jordan told GP in his June
2008 feature. “When I did this album, I decided there was still a part of my
music that lives in the piano. Fortunately, all the two-handed guitar playing I
did helped me to keep my piano chops.”
Don’t miss the amazingly ambidextrous Stanley Jordan when he comes
to Yoshi’s SF in September.
