A master of many styles, Noy has played and recorded with everyone from Mike Clark and Harry Belafonte to Toni Braxton and Gavin DeGraw, but it’s his own brand of blues-marinated, funk-fortified rock fusion that’s making him a rising star in guitar circles.
Last year, Noy released Ha!, one of the most compelling guitar-driven instrumental records since Jeff Beck’s Blow By Blow. His tones range from pristine and vintage to odd, noisy, and otherworldly, and his arrangements as hipnotizing as they are unpredictable. Noy handles the slipperiest and steepest jazz slopes with stunning dexterity, but it’s his ability to infuse this harmonic genius with an equally deep backbeat that makes him a guitar wizard of the grooviest order. Mike Stern, who makes a guest appearance on Ha!, calls Noy “one of the best I’ve ever seen.”
Noy’s New York trio regularly features drummer Anton Fig and bassist Will Lee (both members of the CBS Orchestra, David Letterman’s house band), but on this special trip to San Francisco, Noy will be capably backed by Bass Player Associate Editor Jonathan Herrera (Zigaboo Modeliste, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Eoin Harrington) and drummer Deszon Claiborne (Hieroglyphics, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Johnny Hiland, Ornette Coleman).
And speaking of guitar wizardry, GP’s own Associate Editor Jude Gold (JGB, Merl Saunders, DJ Spooky) will open the show with a set of full-contact baritone guitar, fronting his “evil” trio, JUDE’S RUDE MOOD, featuring Herrera on bass and drummer Dennis Dismore (Leo Nocentelli, Terry Haggerty, Harvey Mandel).
Admit it: You ain’t busy on Tuesday nights. Don’t even think about missing such an action-packed night of music in one of San Francisco’s hippest venues. Support live music!
