Guitar Player Presents Oz Noy in SF Thursday Oct 1 at Coda—Win Tickets

September 23, 2009

It’s official—GP readers appreciate Oz Noy’s Stratocaster brilliance as much as the editors do. Last year, Noy won a Reader’s Choice Award in the Hippest Rhythm Guitar Part category for his kick-ass groove playing on “Which Way Is Up?” Earlier this year Noy won Best New Talent. Now, Noy’s got another nugget of choice noise on his hands entitled Schizophrenic, and he’s returning to San Francisco to showcase it. For this special engagement Noy will hold court at Coda, a very cool new jazz super club located right in the heart of the City by the Bay.

Noy has played and recorded with everyone from Mike Clark and Harry Belafonte to Toni Braxton and Gavin DeGraw, but these days he spends most of his time doing his own thing. That’s good news for guitar enthusiasts, as Noy’s on a hell of a roll. He transplanted from his native Israel to New York City in 1996. He raised eyebrows on 2003’s Oz Live, blew minds with 2005’s groove jazz masterpiece Ha!, and started winning Reader’s Choice awards on the strength of 2007’s Fuzzy. Schizophrenic is another awesome instrumental fusion effort, and features a guest appearance by rock guitar guru Steve Lukather (Toto).

Noy is known for working with some of the sickest rhythm sections in the world. Click here to see an amazing video of Noy playing “Say What?” with Will Lee (David Letterman’s CBS Orchestra) and Keith Carlock (Steely Dan) at New York City’s fabled Bitter End, where Noy has a residency gig.

For his show at Coda in San Francisco, Noy’s trio will include bassist Jonathan Herrera (Sr. Editor of Bass Player) and drummer John Mader (Chuck Prophet).

Prepare to be dazzled by greasy grooves, otherworldly effects, and some of the most original jazz melodies this side of Wayne Krantz. Arrive early, and enjoy a tasty appetizer or entrée before Noy brings two sets of mouthwatering guitar mastery.
