Guitar Player is proud to help bring one of the most
influential acoustic guitar players ever back to the most prominent jazz club
in Northern California. He’s not on tour to promote anything in particular, so
expectations are that he might bust out anything from his celebrated career at
been steamrolling since the late ’60s when he dropped the acoustic A-bomb, 6-
and 12-String Guitar. He
continues to mine new roots territory, and mix elements from folk to jazz.
Kottke’s distinctive fingerstyle playing is always impressive for its singular
rhythmic idiosyncrasies, and its deep resonant tone.
Kottke is also a
true troubadour. With his bassy voice, he delivers terrific tales wrought with
his singular wry wit.
an array of open tunings, but he’s no proponent of them.
“Stay away,” he
urged readers in his January 2006 GP interview. “They’re just a waste of time [laughs]! You’ll find you get something you like
in a kind of boneheaded way and you end up with tunings that apply to only one
tune, and you’ll have to tune to get there. If you just play for yourself it
might be fun, but if you’re going to actually perform, you’re better off in
standard tuning. It’s all available in standard tuning. You only have to listen
to the greats like Joe Pass and John McLaughlin to know that. One of the
reasons I still use open tunings is because I have to play some of my hits.
Since they were written in open tunings, I try to come up with new stuff in the
same tunings so I don’t have to always retune onstage.”
