GP Presents is proud to promote one of the hottest players on the planet when he touches down in San Jose on Thursday. GP
readers have been aware of Bonamassa’s remarkable natural knack for
making a guitar sing for what feels like an eternity because he’s been
doing it professionally since he was a kid. His audience has broadened
considerably in recent years from blues-rock aficionados to the general
public who probably just hear a great singer and songwriter. Bonamassa’s
latest studio CD, Driving Towards the Daylight [J&R
Adventures] debuted atop the Billboard’s Blues Albums chart, and at #23
on the Billboard Top 200—a career-best. At press time, it was still in
the Blues Albums chart’s Top Ten alongside both of Bonamassa’s new live albums, with An Acoustic Evening At The Vienna Opera House in the top spot. Wow!
Bonamassa hopes he’s helping people find their way to his heroes, and turning on young guitar players.
“When I started playing professionally,” Joe Bonamassa told GP, “Danny
Gatton took me aside and said, ‘You know something about blues, but you
need to learn about jazz, country, and early rock and roll.’ My mission
is to spread that message. I want to help younger musicians understand
how today’s music is related to stuff that was popular a long time ago.
The bar for being a professional guitarist has been lowered, but I’m not
writing off an entire generation as there are some brilliant players
Bonamassa means business. He’s teamed up with Guitar
Center for the Blues Masters program. It will offer ten musicians the
chance to perform in Los Angeles backed by Bonamassa’s band, and provide
one undiscovered blues guitarist with career-altering opportunity. The
grand prize includes an opening slot at Joe Bonamassa’s headlining show
in Los Angeles this fall, a feature in Guitar Player, $10,000
cash, gear from Gibson, Ernie Ball, Marshall Amplification and Dunlop,
as well as a mentor session in studio with Bonamassa and producer Kevin
Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden). Think you got what it takes? Click
