Al Di Meola topped the charts of the GP Reader’s Poll so many times in various categories that his name was retired to the Gallery of Greats in 1982. Equally adept on electric or acoustic guitar, he’s participated in watershed projects including Return to Forever with Chick Corea and the Guitar Trio with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin. Di Meola has enjoyed lasting success as a solo artist as well. Di Meola’s current focus is playing acoustic guitar in his New World Sinfonia.
Coming off the 2008 RTF reunion tour (GP’s July 2008 cover story), Di Meola began rehearsing his New World Sinfonia band with Fausto Beccalossi on accordian, Peo Afonsi on acoustic guitar, Peter Kaszas on percussion, Gumbi Ortiz on percussion, and Victor Miranda on bass. Di Meola made the following statement on his Web site:
“The RTF reunion tour was fun and it was great for the fans, but it was more of a nostalgic thing. I'm more interested now in moving forward with the New World Sinfonia, which has really developed into something beautiful and rewarding. The volume isn’t overbearing. Instead, you have a rich harmonic kind of music with lots of emotional improvisation, which really reaches far beyond fusion’s almost head-banging male crowd. There's a cool aspect to that, but it's not where I'm going musically as a composer. What I'm doing now is just completely satisfying, like a phenomenal meal and a great glass of vintage wine.”
