Guitar legend Jeff Beck has held a very special masterclass at leading rock and roll college BIMM Brighton [July]. The iconic guitarist chose to visit the music college while playing Brighton on his current tour to offer invaluable advice to current guitar students and demonstrate why he was ranked 14th on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the ‘100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time’. Jeff’s career has spanned decades, earning him international critical praise while topping countless poles and receiving four Grammy awards. He has played with the greats including Stevie Wonder and Rod Stewart and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year. With an audience of 80 BIMM guitar players in the college’s live room, Jeff talked about some of his trademark techniques, picking up an off-the-shelf signature Strat (courtesy of our mates at GAK), going straight into a BIMM Marshall DSL 50 watt head and, with no pedals, demonstrated how he achieves one of the most recognisable tones in the world. As Eric Clapton famously said: “with Jeff it’s all in his hands”. Jamming with BIMM guitar graduates and students Luke Machin, Sandy Buglass and Ben Poole, Jeff ran through ‘Cause We Ended as Lovers’, ‘Where Were You’, and ‘Blues Deluxe’, taking turns to solo with Ben, Sandy and Luke. The boys then showcased ‘Freeway Jam’ prompting a spontaneous “that’s f**king great!” from Jeff. BIMM director Bruce Dickinson said: “We are honoured to have such an amazing artist come into college and spend time playing with our students. I am very pleased to say that Jeff was also impressed with the quality of our students and their performances. Jeff gave the kind of tutorial that many musicians can only dream of enjoying.” During the masterclass, Gary Moore popped into BIMM to say hello. Some of the lucky BIMM guitarists were invited to Jeff’s Brighton gig, with one very lucky student sitting next to Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. Every year, BIMM arranges week-long summer schools in August for younger musicians and those unable to take up full time courses.
