GP Presents Reverend Horton Heat with Larry & His Flask and Deke Dickerson on November 17th at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, CA—Win Tickets!

November 6, 2013
The line of devilishly skilled Texas guitarslingers is as long as the Lone Star State’s day is dusty, and somewhere on the short list of its hottest players belongs Jim Heath, a.k.a. Reverend Horton Heat. Over the past quarter century Heath has forged a style stewed in psychobilly guitar with generous helpings of outlaw country, blues, swing, and surf licks in the mix. (Read Darrin Fox’s February, 2010 GP interview with Heath here.)

Reverend Horton Heat has released nearly a dozen albums on record labels including Sub Pop, Yep Roc, and now Victory. It sounds as if Horton Heat soaked in some of the label’s punk spirit on Rev. According to Victory, here are five fun facts about RHH that you may not know:

“He’s toured with both Johnny Cash and Soundgarden—in the same month.

His upcoming single, ‘Let me Teach You How to Eat,’ was inspired by a concert promoter who made it his personal mission to teach people how to chew properly.

Psychobilly pioneers the Cramps named him their favorite artist.

He wrote a pictorial history of ‘Jughead’-style beanies, then designed one to sell on his Web site (it ties into his obsession with ’50s car culture).

He has his own line of Gretsch guitars, and each one comes with his inlaid signature

The Stewed, Screwed, and Tattoo tour will, well, Lemmy from Motorhead said it best, ‘Reverend Horton Heat, he’s great and plays the music he believes in and nothing else. Go see him or I'll kill you!’”

Extra special bonus: On this occasion Reverend Horton Heat will have alternative bluegrass buzz band Larry & His Flask plus the ever-popular Deke Dickerson (a.k.a. GP contributor “Deke the Guitar Geek”) in tow for good measure.
