GP Presents Mental 99 Featuring Joe Gore Every Wednesday in July at Madrone Art Bar in San Francisco—Free!
Joe Gore is well known to guitar freaks for his illustrious tenure as an editor at Guitar Player, and for his mindboggling ability as a player whose credits include Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Tracy Chapman, Eels, DJ Shadow, and Courtney Love.
Dawn Richardson is rock-solid on the skins and is known for her work with Four Non-Blondes, Tracy Chapman, and Shana Morrison.
Gore and Richardson have joined forces in the instrumental duo Mental 99. They conjure vast panoramas of sound via live looping—a risky business that can lead to complete collapse, but more often to breathtaking achievement.
Here’s what GP associate editor Barry Cleveland has to say about Mental 99’s eponymous debut:
“Shamanic tone and effects wrangler Joe Gore and drummer Dawn Richardson lay down six uncommonly imaginative originals and four ultra-creative covers in a single pass using sophisticated and flawlessly executed live looping. This album is f’ing brilliant and absolutely inspiring from start to finish.”
Each Wednesday in July they’ll be bringing their highwire act to the lovely Madrone Art Bar in the heart of the City by the Bay. Expect very special invited guests (check the credits again kiddies—these cats are connected)—and unexpected sit-ins from other sonic adventurers. It’s absolutely free, so there’s no excuse not to get your broke musician or music-loving ass off the couch and represent!
