Dinosaur Jr., with the original line-up of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murphy has long been celebrated as alternative rock's most significant pioneers. The trio recently announced plans to release their first ever DVD and their first studio recording since the indie classic Bug, recorded eighteen years ago. Both the DVD and the studio album are slated to hit streets in Spring 2007.
But first, this fall Dinosaur Jr. will do a quick east coast jaunt into intimate venues in Portland (ME), Boston and Northampton (MA), and New York, before crossing the Pond for All Tomorrow's Parties' "Nightmare Before Christmas," the UK's Concorde 2, and other European dates.
The complete list of current Dinosaur Jr. tour dates is as follows:
November 28 The Big Easy Portland ME
November 29 Paradise Rock Club Boston MA
November 30 Pearl Street Northampton MA
December 01-02 Rebel New York NY
December 05 Concorde 2 Brighton UK
December 06 Mean Fiddler London UK
December 09 ATP's "Nightmare Before Christmas" Somerset UK
December 11 Temple Bar Music Centre Dublin IRE
December 12 Warwick Galway IRE
December 13 Zenith Paris FR
December 16 Fritz Club - J. Mascis Solo Berlin GER
On May 8, 2007, the band will release their first ever DVD. Titled Dinosaur Jr.: Live From the Middle East (Image Entertainment), this full length concert DVD was filmed largely at Boston's Middle East, as well as at New York's legendary Irving Plaza and other shows along the band's December 2005 reunion tour. With unfettered access to this famously elusive band, fans can expect one-on-one interviews, behind the scenes goings-on and a full set of performances of Dinosaur Jr. favorites. The DVD features performance footage of 18 Dinosaur Jr. songs originally recorded on their classic first albums: Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug. In addition, Dinosaur Jr.: Live from the Middle East offers the band's 2005 interview at the WXPN's renowned World Café studios and interview appearances by Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Matt Dillon, and others. The DVD was directed by Gold In Berlin, which is run by Mascis' own brother in-law, German filmmaker Phillip Virus.
Also in Spring 2007, J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph will release their first studio album in eighteen years. The trio has spent the last month at Bisquiteen, the recording space at J's house in Amherst, Massachusetts. The album, to be released on a label yet to be determined, will be produced by J Mascis, engineered by John Agnello and Justin Pizzoferrato, and mixed by John Agnello.
Dinosaur Jr.'s sonic wall of melodic bass, furious drums and stunning guitar wizardry, coupled with an almost laissez faire vocal delivery, forever changed the face of rock & roll music. Since the original line-up's reunion last year, The New York Times reviewed Dinosaur Jr. "...loud, alternative, and still definitive...[offering] a glorious show...savage as ever," and RollingStone critiqued the band "...alive and thrilling...Mascis generated towering walls of gorgeous distortion and played heart-rending solos that were almost impossibly pretty, while Murph's ballistic drumming and Barlow's melodic bass anchored Mascis' sonic explorations." Indeed, the band's first three albums, re-issued in 2005 on MERGE, have proved their music to be as relevant today as it was when the band first became. The albums - Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug - were recently deemed by critics as "classics," offering "near-perfect, ridiculously hooky thrash." (Blender)
