You also get seven classic distortion models (which can only be used in conjunction with the above effects), and it’s all delivered in a rock-solid, faux-carbon-graphite enclosure. The concentric knobs provide control over the most logical parameters for each effect, such as frequency range and Q for the wahs, amount of pitch shift and wet/dry mix for Whammy, etc. The rocker pedal governs the most expressive parameter for each sound, like the speed of the Leslie and Uni-Vibe, and the pitch change on the Whammy. Just hit the heel switch to add the distortion model of your choosing to the current effect.
The tones of the various distortions are great and the sound quality of the expression effects is superb throughout, with the Leslie and the ADA simulations alone being well worth the price of admission. DigiTech has provided a ton of routing options—mono, stereo amp, stereo mixer (with speaker simulation), and amp/mixer, making the EX-7 a powerful tool onstage and unstoppable in the studio. Because this pedal does so much, it can be a little daunting at first, so you’ll want to have the manual close by for things like assigning distortions or changing output modes. Oh yeah—if you turn all the effects off it functions as a volume pedal. It would be tough to stuff any more coolness into an enclosure of this size or find any greater value at this price point. For these reasons it gets an Editors’ Pick Award.
