Although they typically get herded under the “Americana” tag, Texas quartet Centro-Matic offer a lot more sonic heft than the bored-sounding strummers typically found in the genre. Nearly all of Fort Recovery, the band’s 11th album, chugs along with stark, loping grooves, allowing the album’s lonesome melodies to arc around the wonderful guitar tones—some of which answer the question, “What would it sound like if Keith Richards joined Kyuss?” Mark Hedman and main songwriter Will Johnson handle the guitar chores, and the two leave nary a wasted note on this beautifully economic record.
