“This is because blues music is underexposed in the media, and, earlier in my career, I was underexposed. I’m not mad about it—better late than never. You have to earn fame, and the public ultimately decides, so it’s best to put it out of your mind and concentrate on playing well. Players like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton did a lot to help get my name out there by citing me as an influence and playing my songs. I was so excited to stand between B.B. King and Eric Clapton as they inducted me into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that the hair on my head would have stood up if I hadn’t cut it all off! While I was receiving that award I was thinking, ‘What about Guitar Slim and Lightnin’ Hopkins?’ I looked up to the good Lord above and said, ‘Tell those guys that when I come home I’m going to bring this induction award with me and share it with them.’”
