Why You Don’t Need Guitar Tab
February 13, 2017
Guitar tab has become an essential part of the modern guitar player’s training. These days, you can find tab pretty much anywhere there’s a guitar lesson or song transcription. We provide it in most of the lessons we post here, and you can find it either in or included with the countless guitar instruction videos on YouTube.
But you might be surprised to learn that tab hasn’t always been around. Think about it. What did guitarists do in those pre-tab, pre-YouTube—heck, pre-Internet—days when they wanted to learn a song? They used their ears and figured it out for themselves.
It’s an idea that still appeals to Tyler Larson, and in this video he tells you how you can do away with tab once and for all.
“I’m not telling you not to use tabs ever again,” Tyler explains. “I’m just telling you that you don’t need them.
“The power to play anything you hear has been inside you all along. You just need to access it. You can do so by throwing tabs to the wayside and strengthening your ear training.”
Take a look. And to help you along, we’ve included another video of Tyler’s that we posted a while back on how to improve your ear training.
