One of the finest players around today. He's a bluegrass player that can do anything with the guitar. If he wants to put on the makeup and shred, I'll buy the record. If he ever did a country record, I'd probably buy that....

Well folks, I have seen this man play with Rob Zombie and let me tell you, his playing was great!!
I do not care if someone wears makeup, so what?
Can you play guitar ?? Well he does. There is a reason why there are so many different kinds of music out there , and if you do not like something, well that is OKAY. John Five may not be for everybody, but I like him and I am sure he can play circles around any of you any day !!!!!

Well I have followed John 5 for many years and can say that he is not just image. He is a well rounded guitar player with great chops. Check out the DLR stuff and more than just Manson. I am surprised a guitar publication is opening the door for such negative feedback on such a great player. His clinics are truly amazing and it would be hard to find a nicer guy to talk to. He is also extremely honest and will give credit to other players which is nice to see. If you think he is just this makeup wearing trenchcoat sideshow then you need to do some serious listening. Not many players out there now push themselves into uncomfortable genres to educate themselves like he does. I am glad he is around both solo and all the projects he gets involved with.

I am older and I like to play more of a classic rock and blues guitar. I think J-5 is very innovative and the top of the line with respect to the style of music he plays, and I am sure his tone is just where he wants it to be. Putting it simply , I enjoyed it very much. Thank-you J-5.

it's a shame that being open minded has gone out the window for some of us. Opinions are always going to vary, but you cannot deny TALENT. This guy has loads of it. Hey, I love guys like Satch and Vai,etc.,etc., but I don't care for everything they put out. If you don't care for something, fine. Just move on to the next thing. If you're as old as I am, you'll remember how the media hated Blackmore..."pretentious, un-melodic" were some of the terms of endearment used to describe his abilities. at this point, I rest.

He's got chops. So do so many others. I think the thing that gripes so many guitarists (those that are more stylistically broad than just metal) is that there are -so-many-other- truly great guitarists out there that aren't getting their due. World, jazz, country, untagable (which retailers tend to blindly label as "new age" since they're beside themselves to catagorize ;-), not to mention a seemingly unending list of fingerstylists, all these seem to play second chair to inferior metal counterparts in the press--maybe it's because they don't wear makeup or masks ;-) GP does a fair job, I believe, but other mags & media fall far short. John 5 is good, I'd not deny that, and probably better than most HM players, but there are so many other stellar guitarists out there that deserve better media coverage.

Really good chops. I don't fully understand the makeup thing. Maybe an extension of his artistry? But isn't music for listening to anyway? Seems I've heard this before though, Vai, Satch, even a little Yngwie. I guess the real test to his talent/chops/artistry will be if after 20, 30, or 40 years his face shows up on a guitar magazine cover.

35 seconds of recycled crap. Sorry. Does nothing 4 me. I guess I'm too old to play the "hero worship" game proliferated by the media. Nothing personal against this guy in particular, if you can still find a way to make a living playing guitar these days, more power to ya. The fanfare and hype over some clown faced "musician" with one eyebrow just made me lose my lunch. Not gonna get into an argument with anybody, so just get over it and do what I;m going to try and do: Find a more worthwhile way to spend my time.

I've seen him twice with Rob Zombie--amazing live sound, brilliant execution, and an utterly sick showman. . .a real presence. Love his stuff with Manson, as well. His solo material has a certain 'commonality' to it--not self-derivative, but certainly some melodic and conceptual motifs that keep "creepin'" into his work again and again. Love it, nonetheless.
