Barry Cleveland: Four One-Sentence CD Reviews (with Audio)

| December 3, 2012

Here's a fresh batch of CDs worthy of your consideration:
Elliott Sharp’s Terraplane
Sky Road Songs

Heading a powerful and tightly knit ensemble that includes the late Hubert Sumlin (on one track) and poet/vocalist Eric Mingus, Sharp rips, roars, stomps, and soars on the seventh Terraplane disc, brilliantly warping traditional blues via visceral grooves, smoking horns, erudite lyrics, and a jigger of downtown jazz smarts. [Featured Track: “Dangerous Lands”] Enja.
Golden Void
Golden Void

If a fuzz and wah-driven fun ride through a room full of mirrors reflecting ’60s San Francisco psychedelic rock, Hawkwind (the source of the band’s name?), and early Sabbath with a touch of Tull strikes your fancy, you’ll likely dig guitarist Isaiah Mitchell and crew’s trip—and they even hail from Babylon by the Bay. [Featured Track: “The Curve”] Thrill Jockey.
Hans Theessink & Terry Evans
Delta Time

There’s a wonderful old-school vibe to these largely acoustic blues and bluesy numbers, which feature solid playing, deeply soulful vocals and vocal harmonies, and killer cameos by Ry Cooder on several songs (Evans' gospel-tinged voice graces several of Cooder’s classic ’70s recordings). [Featured Track: “Shelter From the Storm”] Blue Groove.
Andre LaFosse
The Hard Bargain

Six-string iconoclast LaFosse goes anti-rogue on this comparatively straightforward “power trio” instrumental rock album, though, of course, he can’t entirely screen out all of the quirky chord shifts, squiggly melodies, and surprising timbres that make his uncommon music and playing so intriguing. Altruist.
