GIG NIGHTMARE, May 2011

gp0511_comm_gig1_nr1Thirty-three years ago, I played bass in a Gainesville, Florida southern-rock band. We were playing at a roadhouse that featured an occasionally dangerous clientele, and, between sets, I found myself talking to a young man who told me about his urge to strangle people. Attempting to be sympathetic, I said, “Well, I suppose we all have issues in life we need to overcome.” During the next set, to my horror, this same guy appeared in front of the stage and began to throttle the man dancing next to him. Our guitarist— a former Gators football player—gracefully whipped off his Les Paul, leapt from the stage, lifted this deranged fellow into the air, and held him down on the bar until security arrived. I’m now an Episcopal priest, and I view this conversation as my very first—albeit unsuccessful— pastoral counseling session. —REV. LUPTON ABSHIRE
