Ending months of speculation and intrigue, Paul McCartney has announced on his website that he will indeed headline "Farewell to Candlestick: The Final Concert" on August 14 in San Francisco.
The made-for-media-buzz moment—a former Beatle returning to say goodbye to the ballpark where the Fab Four performed their last "official" concert on August 29, 1966—was rumored almost since the former home of the San Francisco 49ers was slated for demolition. In fact, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee had personally approached McCartney about closing the park when his band played at Golden Gate Park's Outside Lands Festival in 2013. Things got a bit dark, however, when it was discovered that the departing 49ers were also in talks with McCartney about opening their new stadium in Santa Clara.
But everything worked out for San Francisco and the Stick, as McCartney will play the park as part of his 2014 "Out There" tour.
Tickets will go on sale May 5 at 10 am PST.
Candlestick Park will be demolished this fall and a development of offices, retail stores, and residences will take its place.
