"I was resisting yet another offer to do a clinic," says Joe Satriani about the development of his G4 Experience, which kicks off this coming August 11-15, in Cambria, California. "I wanted a more personal touch, and I wanted to have a longer-lasting impact on the students, so I started thinking, 'How would we do that?'"
The answer — after much discussion and conceptualizing — was to expand the idea of a single, "Satriani clinic" into a variety of clinics, day and night, with different musicians who have different attitudes and strengths in their techniques and creativity.
"Once we had the design, I asked Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons, and Mike Keneally to join me, so that students could learn from four very different guys performing together and separately," explains Satriani. "And because the G4 Experience is five days, the time restraints of a normal clinic are greatly relaxed. We don't have to squeeze, say, a couple of topics into a single clinic or lesson. This is a totally immersive event, where you can take your time to absorb ideas from each of us. I just feel that you can learn so much more when you can actually rub elbows with professional guitarists.
"After all, there isn't a technique that's better than another, or a scale that's
more musical than another scale. Eventually, everything is equal. So the key
for a subject like this is to expose the students to all the different
tools that Paul, Andy, Mike, and I use as professional guitar players, composers, and recording artists. I want to show them all the different ways we use those tools, how they
can be used, and what the end results can be. And we are living examples of using tools in different ways. When I look at photos of us performing, for example, I see each of us playing
different instruments, holding our hands in different ways, holding our picks
a little different, and so on. That variety is where the life is. In fact, I bet I walk out of this experience learning quite a bit, as well. I almost wish I was going as a student myself, and not actually playing!"
