Walter “Wolfman” Washington is one of the funkiest players—and most impressive rhythm guitarists—on the blues scene. GP’s coverage of the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival contained this insightful take on Wolf’s singular rhythm chops:

“Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington’s guitar playing on the Congo stage was a textbook study in left-hand positioning. Washington made a one-chord funk groove pop by wrapping his thumb around the neck in a tight grip while pumping his fretting fingers up and down on the fretboard. He got the most impact out of each chord hit, and then quickly released his grip for a muted effect. Imagine Morse code delivered with varying dynamics on a guitar with a percussion player’s pulse. For jazzier stuff, Washington employed a traditional grip with his thumb way down behind the neck, allowing his long fingers to form a strong barre, as well as to cleanly reach notes several frets above.”

This is a rare chance to see the Southern swamp master on the Left Coast, and the Brick & Mortar Music Hall (formerly the Coda Jazz Supper Club) is a hell of a place to do it. It’s centrally located in the heart of San Francisco just south of Market Street at 1710 Mission Street between Duboce and 14th Street (practically under Hwy 101). It’s a spacious room with a killer sound system. For those who went to Coda but haven’t been since the change over, it’s essentially similar but with a better stage and without all the tables in the middle, so now the band and the audience are free to cut loose.

Event Details:
GP Presents Walter Wolfman Washington & The Roadmasters
Jimmy Leslie & The Flow (opens)
Thursday, August 11, 2011
Doors: 8:00 pm / Show: 9:00 pm
Brick & Mortar Music Hall
1710 Mission Street just south of Market San Francisco, CA 94103
Daytime Office: 415.371.1636 After 6pm: 415.800.8782
$10.00 - $15.00 tickets
GP Presents promotions are sponsored by D’Addario and Planet Waves
Free Guitar Player magazines, D’Addario strings, and Planet Waves accessories

Contest Details
For a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show, click HERE and put Wolfman in the subject of your email.
