Les Paul & Mary Ford, 1951
This gem from 1951 is an amazing track to listen to, but the real treat is the clip from Les and Mary’s TV show. Sure, Mary is lip-synching, and Les is handsynching (unless he also invented the first wireless system), but the guy is absolutely on fire, somehow playing a constant barrage of chords, fills, and rhythm chucks without ever getting in the way of the vocal. His tone is lively and bright, and his sense of the pocket drives the tune in a bouncy, infectious way. The solo is a tour de force, with Mr. LP blazing on clucky double-stops, triplet pull-offs, sweep picking, and a righteous lowstring ending. If someone released this today, they would not only get a hit, but you would call the guitarist innovative and brilliant. Thanks for everything, Les.
