Yellowjackets and guitarist Mike Stern join forces for a historic collaboration
April, 2008
Labelmates on Heads Up, Mike Stern and the Yellowjackets shared the stage at the 2006 Montreal Jazz Festival and worked so well together that they decided to make an album. Set for release on May 20, LIFECYCLE is the first Yellowjackets recording in 15 years to feature a guitarist.
“For those who dug the earliest Yellowjackets material—the burning stuff with jazz-blues guitar killer Robben Ford—your ship has arrived…Alongside the core band of bassist Jimmy Haslip, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, drummer Marcus Baylor and reedist Bob Mintzer, Stern brings his instantly recognizable timbre and technique—a meld of bop phrasing and rock bends glossed with stereo chorus—to 10 tracks of smartly grooving contemporary jazz.”

“If you’ve not heard the Yellowjackets in a while, this album may prove the perfect reintroduction.”
Guitar Edge
“Seriously, who cares that Yellowjackets haven’t had a guitarist on one of their sets in 15 years? If Robben Ford left the group last week it would still be news that Mike Stern is grabbing the guitar chair to light some sparks in each camp. With a new energy on both sides, this is the sound of someone lighting a new fuse under fusion. Every byte of the way shows you a hot, tasty date that peels back the years in all of us. Of course, uninitiated youngsters will just groove to the fire on board. Hot stuff.”
