Steve Stevens’ Rebel Riff
| August, 2007
You don’t have to have been rocking spandex and peroxide-blonde hair back in the ’80s to remember Steve Stevens’ hypnotizing intro to Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.” The song is still a rock radio mainstay, and, like some twisted combination of “Foxey Lady” and the theme to The Twilight Zone, this eerie yet percussive guitar intro immediately gets under your skin. Inspired by the “Rebel” riff, the lick presented here creates a similar vibe. The trick is plucking staccato fourths on the highest two strings with the middle and ring fingers while sounding a legato bass line with the pick.
