Meaner Street
Readers Challenge
| November, 2005
When some people hear a spectacular two-handed riff, such as the prelude to Van Halen’s “Mean Street,” their reaction might be, “Whoa, dude, that sounds killer. Pass the bong.” But not Shane Gibson.
An active recording artist and guitar instructor in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Gibson probably instead reacted to Van Halen’s amazing intro with, “Pass the guitar”—after which the talented and versatile Berklee graduate conceivably began work on the stunning two-handed-tapping tour de force transcribed below. The intro to his polyrhythmic prog-metal mini-epic, “Centurion 3” (from his solo album Mr. Stork), this fun, melodic, and just plain sick lick is demonstrated in both video and audio formats by Gibson on his website, shaneguitar.com.
