Pentatonic Slingshot
“This is a little trick I’d like to share,” says Gianmaria Scattolin, a Hollywood, California, guitarist who sent in the saucy pentatonic phrase below. “Using the first and third strings, it moves up the fretboard through all five pentatonic [scale] boxes until it reaches the next octave. It sounds cool, and—because it’s so visual—it also looks cool when you play it. It sounds great over a steady Am7 chord, but it also works over blues harmonies. Hey, it’s a pentatonic lick—it works over everything!”
